Make sure to download the Excel Workbook below and follow along:
#QUERY IN EXCEL 2016 FOR MAC DRIVER#
You should be able to designate a DSN on the Mac and use the same DSN when configuring an ODBC driver in Windows. That is wrong and it should not be doing that. No matter what I've tried, even when I specify to connect using a Data Source Name (DSN), Excel for Windows uses a DBQ connection having a hard coded file path. Now open a workbook made in Excel for Windows. When you make a database query in Excel on the Mac and look at the properties of the resulting querytable you will see that the Connection String is DSN and the Command Text is correct, as shown here in a screen shot where I named the example Northwind database The problem is with Excel for Windows, not the Mac. Microsoft has not provided a cross-platform solution for using other ODBC drivers. Microsoft has succeeded in providing a cross-platform solution for SQL Server using the built-in SQL Server driver. You can NOT use the interface in Excel to Add external datasources.

As I said in my answer before your reply - you MUST use the MAC OS X ODBC Manager app.
